Hemlock Siding, Soffit & Trim — CVG and CMG

A clean, consistent natural wood species for prefinished exterior and interior applications in Colorado mountain construction

CVG Hemlock 2x Soffit Custom Grey Brown Beige on Colorado mountain home

Hemlock is one of the cleanest natural wood species available for prefinished siding, soffit, and trim work. Its tight, uniform grain takes finish evenly, presents consistently from board to board, and holds color well over time. For Colorado mountain construction — where wood character matters and the details show — hemlock delivers a refined look that cedar and pine cannot match at the same grade level.

Rocky Mountain Finishes carries hemlock in two product lines: CVG (Clear Vertical Grain) and CMG (Clear Mixed Grain). Both are available prefinished in the full RMF color range and backed by our finish warranty. Thermally modified and FRTW options are also available.

Why Hemlock

Hemlock is a tight-grained, consistent species with a fine, smooth face and relatively uniform color from board to board. Compared to cedar or pine, hemlock produces fewer resin pockets, less color variation, and a more predictable surface for prefinishing. The result is an installation that looks intentional — clean lines, consistent color, and a face that holds finish without blotching or uneven penetration.

CVG Hemlock — Clear Vertical Grain

CVG stands for Clear Vertical Grain. The vertical grain cut means the growth rings run perpendicular to the face of the board — this is the most stable orientation for natural wood and the configuration that presents the cleanest, most refined appearance. The CVG grade is also knot-free, producing a consistent face from end to end with no character interruptions.

CVG hemlock is the premium grade. It is the right call for high-visibility applications where a clean, architectural look is non-negotiable — soffits visible from the ground, interior accent cladding, trim at eye level, and feature wall applications where every board is on display.

CMG Hemlock

CMG hemlock is a more cost-effective, clear solution — available in a wide range of textures including 1x, 2x, Rough, and Smooth. It is the right choice for applications where hemlock's species characteristics matter but the strict grain orientation of CVG is not the priority. CMG hemlock is commonly used for soffits, siding accent zones, and interior cladding where the prefinished color and species quality are the spec drivers.

CMG hemlock paired with a contrasting primary siding material is one of the most common high-end exterior combinations in our market — the hemlock soffit brings warmth and grain character to the underside where it is visible from the ground, while the primary field material handles weather exposure and compliance.

WUI Considerations

WUI Note: Hemlock is a natural wood product and is not noncombustible. It does not carry blanket WUI compliance across all fire intensity zones. Confirm with the AHJ before speccing hemlock as a primary exterior material in Moderate or High WUI zones. Hemlock is commonly used for soffits and trim in WUI applications where the primary siding is a compliant noncombustible material. For projects that require hemlock on a WUI-compliant assembly, Rocky Mountain Finishes offers thermally modified hemlock, Class A fire treatment, and fire retardant paint additives — all of which can bring hemlock into compliance for applicable zones.

Benefits & Drawbacks

Drawbacks

The common pairing: CMG or CVG hemlock soffit with a fiber cement or cedar primary siding is one of the most refined exterior combinations in Colorado mountain construction. The hemlock brings warmth and grain character to the soffit plane where it is visible from the ground, while the primary material handles weather exposure and compliance. We can help you build that spec.
